About Dog Named Fish
Hi. I’m Angela. Thanks for your interest in my paintings.
Stumped and trapped during the pandemic lockdown, my teenage son asked if we could paint a huge mural on the back of the house…we desperately needed something creative to do. My answer: Sure, let’s do it! Here began my first exploration into painting.
A little later on a trip to Lake Tahoe I brought paints and paper for fun and decided to attempt painting some photos of my dog off my phone as a way to get started. When a friend suggested: “Don’t stop until you’ve painted 100 of the same thing!” I was intrigued and chose to stick with my subject, my current muse, a blue nosed pitbull named Fish, a cinder block on legs, my gentle giant of a goofball dog. Then another friend asked if I’d do a commission. I went from “I’m not a real painter” to working with dozens of people. Each painting a challenge. Each a new opportunity. I love solving visual problems.
I often feel like “The Shaggs”* of painters, winging it, off beat, stumbling into a layered rhythm with naivete similar and reminiscent to how I approach writing, music and life. It’s all about the process, the interaction with you, the viewers and pet owners and how, together, we can tease out details that make your commission one of a kind. Thank you for trusting me with this.
As a writer I was initiated into the concept "First thought, Best thought”. I apply this to the paintings until there's a story. I hope to make the story uniquely yours. Something will occur! Let’s work together!
*The Shaggs were an American rock band comprised the Wiggin sisters. Their music has been described as both among the worst of all time and a work of unintentional brilliance. -
